If you have been reading the tax press or even this blog, you will know plenty about the problems taxpayers are having with phone and email scams posing as the IRS.  Well, now the IRS has announced that they will stop initiating field audits by telephone.

So, the examiner will send a letter and then follow-up with a phone call.  Everyone should be aware that they will never contact via EMAIL.

Per Kiplinger’s Tax Letter:

“IRS will stop initiating field audits by telephone, in response to complaints by taxpayer rights groups and practitioners that such phone calls are inappropriate in light of the pervasive phone scams by fraudsters masquerading as IRS employees.”
